2010 Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale

FORT COLLINS – Colorado State Equine Sciences students will host the 5th annual Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale on April 24, which features 68 horses from 23 respected ranch consigners.

Over 25 percent of the nearly 400 CSU Equine Sciences students actively organize and produce the sale every year. Reflecting the land-grant mission of Colorado State University, the sale is a collaboration of three university classes focused on experiential industry-based learning. Responsibilities range from training consigned colts to event and sales management. The Wagonhound Land & Livestock Student Competition, held prior to the sale, awards up to 15 scholarships annually.

Ranches from around the country provided students with 37 two and three year olds to train and fit for this year’s sale. Finished performance and ranch horses from the respective consigners’ ranches will also be featured in the class. Beyond preserving excellent genetics, consigners understand the importance of investing in the future of equine leaders.

The 2010 consigners include: Abraham Equine, Bartlett Ranches, Becker Ranch, Bogle Ltd. Co., Bucholz Family, Burnett Ranches, LLC (6666), Cowan Select Horses, LLC, Crofoot Ranches, LLP, Hanging H Ranch, Haythorn Ranch Co., KeSa Quarter Horses, Mantz Creek Horses, Purina Mills, Ritchey Land & Cattle Co., S Ranch Ltd., Saunders Ranch, Singleton Ranches, T-Cross Ranches, Valley Oak Ranch, Wagonhound Land & Livestock, Ware Ranch, Mike Wilson, and Wood Ranch.

In 2009, the Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale averaged $4,308 per horse. The high selling horse sold for $19,500 and was a 2006 gelding consigned by Cowan Select Horses, LLC. This year a live auction, featuring items such as spurs and western artwork, has been added to the beginning of the horse sale.

The 2010 Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale will be held April 24 at the CSU Equine Teaching and Research Center in Fort Collins, Colo. Horses will be on-site and available for viewing on Friday, April 23. Saturday will feature a morning preview followed with the sale in the afternoon.
